The "Fiver" Party Trend: What is it and Why?!?

There seems to be a new birthday party trend popping up called the "Fiver." The "Fiver" party is where parents are asking for a $5 cash gift from each guest instead of presents. Is it really OK to ask such a thing from you guests right on the invitation? Is it considered rude? Yes, I get it, some playrooms are bursting at the seams with toys that don't get played with and collect dust but do younger kids really need cash?

On one side of things, it could be a good way to teach your child how to save instead of spending every penny but on the other side will the child get upset if they don't have enough for what they really wanted? From the parents perspective, if going to a birthday would end in hearing crickets in their wallet from getting a gift, it may be a lifesaver to see "We are only asking for $5 instead of a gift" on the invitation.

If a Fiver Party is in your near future, or you are considering having one for your child there is a right and wrong way to approach it. Fiver Parties can go from tacky to interesting with proper presentation. An example of great invitation wording:

"We are trying to help (name of child) enjoy celebrating this special occasion with their closest friends rather than focus on receiving gifts.

On that note - we hope you'll consider not giving a gift. For those who feel uncomfortable with that, we ask you consider a $5 gift card or cash that he/she can put towards something special.

Thanks for understanding and celebrating with us."

What would you do if you received this kind of invitation?
